If your cat climbs onto your lap and starts pushing their paws in and out like they’re kneading bread, you’re not alone. It might feel a bit odd, especially if their claws get involved, but it’s actually a sign you’re loved! This behaviour starts when cats are tiny kittens. They knead their mum’s belly to help the milk flow. It’s soothing for them and often sticks as a lifelong habit. When your cat kneads you, it means they feel safe and happy in your company. You’re their comfort zone. Some cats even purr, dribble, or get glassy-eyed while doing it—it’s like they’re in a little blissful bubble. It can also be a way of marking you as ‘theirs’. Cats have scent glands in their paws, so when they knead, they’re spreading their scent on you. It sounds quite possessive, but in cat terms, it’s affectionate. If the kneading hurts, place a blanket on your lap or gently move them to a different spot. Try not to push them away suddenly—it can feel like rejection. And none of us want to upset our furry friends, right? A bit of trimming their claws can help too, making the whole experience a touch less prickly. In some cases, more intense kneading could be a sign your cat is feeling anxious. If they’re doing it obsessively, or you notice other odd behaviour, it might be worth chatting to your vet. But usually, kneading is just your cat’s funny little way of showing love. So next time those paws start marching, take it as a compliment.
