You’re all tucked up in bed, finally drifting off… and then it starts. Your dog barking in the middle of the night like it’s spotted a ghost. Sound familiar? It’s a common headache for many of us dog owners. But don’t worry – your pup isn’t just trying to ruin your sleep. Dogs bark at night for all sorts of reasons. It could be that they’ve heard a fox outside or a car door slam down the road. Their hearing is much sharper than ours! Sometimes, barking comes from boredom or anxiety, especially if there’s been a change at home – like a new pet or a house move. Older dogs can also bark more if they’re feeling confused at night, which may be a sign of doggy dementia. And let’s not forget the classic – needing the loo. If your dog isn’t used to holding it through the night, they might bark to get your attention. Try checking if they’ve got everything they need before bedtime. Walk, wee, food, cosy spot to sleep – all ticked off? If the barking continues, it’s good to stay calm. Shouting back might make things worse, as your dog could think you’re joining in! Instead, see if there’s a trigger outside or if they’re waking up at the same time each night. If it becomes a habit, a vet check or a chat with a behaviourist can help. You’re not alone in this – many dog parents have late-night barkers. With a bit of detective work, you’ll have quiet nights again soon.
